This book was a nice read, though rather long! The book read quite a bit like Jeffrey Archer’s Clifton Chronicles which also starts by covering World War 1, has bright East End working class characters trying to improve their lives verses aristocrats making stupid decisions on the battle fields of France due to snobbish opinions, the winning of the underdog after some terrible trials of unfairness, the lord of the manor getting the maid pregnant and dumping her. I’m sure the next book in the trilogy covers the intermingling of the various children produced by these characters (the half-brothers, working class children and the aristocratic children) in love and political triangles and the truth about the half-brothers and the dodgy aristocratic lord get forced out in a public and humiliating manner.

Short Short Story – no more than 2,000 words

Short Story – Generally up to 7,500 words

Novelette – 20,000 – 25,000 words

Novella – a short novel, around 50,000 words

Novel – roughly 80,000. to 100,000 words. Varies depending on genre. If it’s fantasy/sci-fi add on 20,000.

Young Adult novel – 50,000 to 75,000 words
