Review: The Last Empress

Chronicles of Tania

The Last Empress
The Last Empress by Anchee Min
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book gives an insight into China’s political and cultural history in the late 1800s to early 1900s when foreign powers were invading, dictating terms, misrepresenting the royal family to the world and taking over parts the Chinese empire (British – Shanghai and Hong Kong, French – Indochina, Japan – Taiwan and the ports nearby, Russians – Trans-Siberian railway and Manchuria, Germany and US – other ports etc). It’s no wonder the Chinese are so protectionist now about foreign companies establishing themselves in their country…
