Review: Acheron

Chronicles of Tania

Acheron
Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another book I loved reading from this author. This is the companion book to Styxx and is about his twin Acheron. Interestingly, in this book there is very little mention of Styxx or any endearing thoughts Acheron has for his twin brother even when they are young. So it seems to me that the second book Styxx wasn’t a planned one…!
Having read both books, what comes to light is how different characters can view the same situations and see different things and have completely different opinions, just as a group of people would do in real life. I like both Acheron and Styxx characters, though perhaps Styxx is less self-absorbed and comes across more human (no pun intended there)since Acheron can get revenge and turn his life around as he ends up a God.

Review: Empress Orchid

Chronicles of Tania

Empress Orchid
Empress Orchid by Anchee Min
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book about the last Empress of China and the court intrigues with other concubines and eunuchs inside the Forbidden City. It was amazing the lengths others would go to destroy Orchid and her pregnancy. The first book in this two part series about Empress Orchid tells about the first half of her life and is all about relationships and how she established herself as an Empress by giving birth to the first royal son. I highly recommend this book to others.

Review: The Last Empress

Chronicles of Tania

The Last Empress
The Last Empress by Anchee Min
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book gives an insight into China’s political and cultural history in the late 1800s to early 1900s when foreign powers were invading, dictating terms, misrepresenting the royal family to the world and taking over parts the Chinese empire (British – Shanghai and Hong Kong, French – Indochina, Japan – Taiwan and the ports nearby, Russians – Trans-Siberian railway and Manchuria, Germany and US – other ports etc). It’s no wonder the Chinese are so protectionist now about foreign companies establishing themselves in their country…

Review: Styxx

Chronicles of Tania

Styxx
Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. It’s such a good read that I recommend it to everyone.

Styxx of Didymos is such an interesting and well rounded character who goes through a lifetime (and more) of obstacles, abuse and hardships to have a satisfying happy ending with his beloved. This is essentially a romance with a lot of battles and messed-up relationships surrounding it. I was crying and reading this book. When a book engages the emotions it’s pretty powerful and you know it’s well written and a believable character. The only criticism I have is that there were too many modern-day characters that I was lost with all the names, types – demons, daimons, chtonians etc.
